COVID-19 San Diego County Update – 4-9-2021 | News

Here’s today’s COVID-19 update from the County Human Services and Health Agency with data through April 8th.

Vaccination progress:

  • Nearly 2.2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the region and approximately 2 million have been reported when administered. This number includes both county residents and those working in San Diego County.
  • Of those vaccinated to date, more than 652,000 county residents, or 24.3% of San Diegans age 16 and older, are fully immunized.
  • Overall, nearly 1.12 million county residents have received at least one shot of the two-dose vaccine. It is 41.7% of those eligible.
  • Those who receive the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine are added to the total of fully vaccinated San Diegoans.
  • The difference between the doses administered and those used in a vaccination represents approximately what is expected to be administered in the next seven days and the doses still to be entered into the registration system.

Status metrics:

  • The adjusted case rate calculated by the state of San Diego County is currently 5.8 cases per 100,000 residents (as of April 6) and the region is in Orange Tier or Tier 3.
  • Currently, the test positive percentage is 2.3%, placing the county at level 3 or Orange level.
  • The county’s health equity metric, which analyzes test positivity for areas with the lowest health conditions, is 2.6% and is also at the Orange or Tier 3 level.
  • The three metrics place the county at the Orange or Tier 3 level for activities.
  • The California Department of Public Health evaluates counties on a weekly basis. The next report is scheduled for Tuesday, April 13th.

Community configuration outbreaks:

  • Three new community outbreaks were confirmed on April 8: one in a daycare / preschool / daycare center, one in a TK-12th primary school and one in a restaurant / bar.
  • In the last seven days (April 2 to April 8), 19 outbreaks of the community were confirmed.
  • The number of community outbreaks stays above the trigger for seven or more days.
  • An outbreak of community environment is defined as three or more cases of COVID-19 in one environment and in people from different households during the last 14 days.

Tests:

  • On April 8, 17,194 tests were reported in the county and the percentage of new positive cases was 1%.
  • The average percentage of 14 days of positive cases is 2.1%. The target is less than 8.0%.
  • The daily average of 7-day tests is 12,156.

Cases, hospitalizations and ICU admissions:

  • On April 8, 202 COVID-19 cases were reported in the county. The total for the region is 272,696.
  • 14,952 or 5.5% of all cases required hospitalization.
  • 1,664 or 0.6% of all cases and 11.1% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.

Deaths:

  • Eight new deaths were reported for COVID-19 on April 8th. The total for the region is 3,600.
  • Seven men and a woman died between January 5 and 9.
  • Of the people who died, one was 80 or older, three were 70, two were 60, one was 50 and one was 30.
  • Six had underlying medical conditions and two had a pending medical history.
