DALLAS – The Dallas Cowboys announced on Friday the dismissal of defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula.
The Cowboys had one of the worst defensive performances in the franchise’s history and, even worse, were criticized throughout the 2020 season for the obvious lack of intensity of several defensive players.
“I love my relationship with both Mike and Jim, and I appreciate the contributions they have made to our team in the difficult circumstances of 2020,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said in a statement. “They are never easy decisions to make. I wish the best for them and their families in the future.”
Both coaches were hired as part of McCarthy’s staff at the end of the previous season.

Dallas ’defense was poor from start to finish, in all aspects, including lack of communication and game day preparation, which players complained anonymously about during the first half of the season.
Dallas received 29.6 points per game, the fifth-worst mark in the NFL; they were the penultimate against the race, accepting 58.8 yards per side, among the total 386.4 yards per game.
The Cowboys allowed 258 points in the first six games, the most since 1954 for any team in the league. In the end, they accepted 473 points, the largest amount in their history.
Dallas allowed 164.8 yards per average run per game, his second worst mark; back only to that of the year of its foundation in 1960.
During the last four games, of which they won three, they seemed to improve on defense by recovering 11 rival balls.
Dallas finished 6-10, out of the postseason for the second year in a row.
