Panamanian player Johan Camargo, a member of the Eagles Cibaeñas of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series, was harshly criticized on social media for celebrating his team’s victory over the Federal Chiriquí of Panama in the semifinals of the tournament Caribbean, which brings together the champion clubs of the regional leagues.
On Saturday, the Eagles bounced back in the ninth inning to leave the Federals on the field with a two-run drive hit from Carlos Paulino with full bases. Camargo was one of the runners who scored on the plate and immediately began to celebrate the passage to the final that is played on Saturday against the Caguas de Caguas of Puerto Rico.
Federal pitcher Jaume Barria categorized the actions of Camargo, a member of the Atlanta Braves in the Major Leagues, as “a lack of respect for the country.”
On Sunday, Camargo – who has been strengthening the Eagles in Dominican ball since 2017 and taking part in his first Caribbean Series – posted a press release on his social media apologizing for what happened, at the same time as recalled that the pageant is made up of ninth private.
“I want to offer my most sincere apologies if anyone felt offended to celebrate the victory of the club that has given me the opportunity to raise the name of Panama,” Camargo wrote.
The third baseman has not had his best debut in the competition. In five regular-season games, he batted 125 with two hits in 16 innings.
Also in the ranks of the Creoles are Yankees’ Dominican opener Luis Medina and American gardener Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox.
