Cuban handball goalkeeper Alfredo Quintana dies at the age of 32

Alfredo Quintana, Cuban goalkeeper of the Portuguese handball team Porto, died this Friday in Portugal, where he was admitted in a very serious condition after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest this Monday, Has reported his team to the press.

Havana-born Quintana was just 32 years old when he suffered a heart attack during a workout. He has since been cared for in the intensive care unit of São João Hospital.

After confirming his death, his team shared on social media a message of condolence in which they assure that the Cuban will be “always remembered” as a whole.

Alfredo Quintana lived in Cuba until 2009. He arrived at FC Porto a decade ago and in 2014, after becoming a Portuguese national, he made his debut with the Portuguese national team, with which he played 72 international matches.

The West Indian had managed to establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Portuguese League, also establishing himself as one of the most unbalanced players in his position at international level, both in the category of clubs and national teams.

Last January, Quintana played a relevant role with the Portuguese national team at the World Handball Championships in Egypt, a key event to show the good performance of the Portuguese team.

The Porto team also recently played the Champions League match against Meshkov Brest in Belarus.

Portugal will face France, Croatia and Tunisia from March 12 to 14 in Montpellier in the Olympic qualifying tournament for the Tokyo Games.
