The rate of new coronavirus cases in the United States remains high as the country attempts to increase its vaccination campaign following the shutdown of Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine distribution.

The country reports about 71,200 new Covid cases a day, based on an average of seven days of data from Johns Hopkins University. This is well below the nation’s winter peak, but in line with levels observed during the summer, when the daily average of cases exceeded 67,000.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show an average of 3.3 million daily doses of vaccine administered over the past week.

A CDC group decided on Wednesday to postpone a decision on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine while investigating the cases of six women who developed a blood clotting disorder.

US vaccines are administered

After 2.5 million doses of vaccine were administered Wednesday, the United States averaged 3.3 million shots a day over the past week. This daily average has been over 3 million for eight consecutive days.

U.S. officials say the pause in Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine use will not slow the country’s vaccine launch, noting that there is enough supply from Moderna and Pfizer to keep up with the current vaccination rate.

According to CDC data, approximately 7.5 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been administered in the U.S. out of nearly 195 million total doses. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have accounted for most of the traits given to Americans so far.

About 37% of the American population has received at least one vaccine against Covid and 23.1% are completely vaccinated.

Among those 65 and older, approximately 80% have received one or more doses and 63% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.

According to Johns Hopkins data, the average seven-day new coronavirus cases daily in the U.S. is 71,282, 8% more than a week ago.

In Michigan, the state experiencing the worst outbreak in the country according to new cases per capita, the number of infections continues to rise. The state reports a seven-day average of nearly 7,900 new cases daily, approaching the state’s highest pandemic of more than 8,300 per day recorded in December.

Overall, cases are increasing in 33 states and in Washington, DC

The United States on Wednesday reported 956 deaths from covides, according to Hopkins data, bringing the total number of pandemic deaths to more than 564,400.
