Some people play golf because they enjoy walking around in comfortable clothes on a nice summer day. Others enjoy the challenge of placing a small ball in a small cup with a stick. In Damn golf, coming to PC and Switch in 2022 from developer Chuhai Labs, play golf to escape an eternity in golf purgatory. Obviously, this is the best reason to play golf.
Call Thunderful Publishing and Chuhai Labs Damn golf a golf like, which is incredibly confusing. They also call it golf roguelike, which clarifies things a bit, but not too much. Basically, you, the player, are about to get the winning shot at a major golf tournament when you are struck by lightning. Killed instantly, you find yourself trapped in the purgatory of otherworldly golf, which I have to guess is where you end up if you’re too good for golf hell but too bad for golf. I must also assume that the dying innocent golfers also end up in golf purgatory, but this is an existential crisis for another time.
In short, you have to win the golf purgatory tournament to escape the damn plane. There are 18 holes spread across four different biomes. Each hole has a fixed number of shots you can make. Clear the hole in the pair or below and you can move on. Review yourself and go back to the beginning of the course.
As you can probably see in the screenshots and the trailer, this is not a normal golf game. It’s more of a side-scrolling golf puzzle game, where shooting perfectly can trigger explosives, clear blocked paths, and more. There are power-ups. There are strange and mystical beings. And there are many ball hits with a stick.
