Casey Bloys, content director for HBO and HBO Max, has confirmed with Variety that “Chappelle’s Show” will be removed from HBO Max later this month at the request of series creator and star Dave Chappelle. Statement by Per Bloys: “We had a conversation with Dave. I won’t go into it, but it’s very clear that he has a very unique, specific and emotional topic. So at the end of the year, at the end of this year, on the 31st of December, we will comply with your request and withdraw the program. “

The decision to remove HBO Max’s “Chappelle’s Show” follows in the footsteps of Netflix which removed the series of sketches from its broadcast platform in late November. Chappelle urged his fans not to air “Chappelle’s Show” on various platforms because the owner of the ViacomCBS series has not paid him to license the Comedy Central hit. With the fact that Netflix will stop airing “Chappelle’s Show” and HBO Max soon, only CBS All Access, owned by ViacomCBS, will include the show in its library.

Chappelle posted an Instagram video at the time Netflix took out the “Chappelle’s Show” program to explain its reasons why it asked companies to withdraw the series. The comic said, “People think I made a lot of money with the“ Chappelle’s Show. ”When I left that show they never paid me. [ViacomCBS] he didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract. But, right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and that they should never ask me or tell me. Perfectly legal because I signed the contract. But, right? I didn’t think so either. “

In the same video, Chappelle reflected on how ironic it was that HBO Max was taking advantage of Chappelle’s show when so many years ago HBO turned down the presentation of the comic for the TV series. As Chappelle explained, “they said, literally, what do we need you for?” That’s what they told me when I was kicked out of the office, “What do we need you for?” And here we are all these years later and they broadcast the same program that presented them. So I ask them, why do you need me? “
“Chappelle’s Show” will continue live on HBO Max until December 31st.
