David Beckham’s Inter Miami loses first legal battle with Inter Milan for MLS name use | Other Football Leagues

David Beckham is collecting trouble on his new MLS team, Inter Miami.

The Briton had a lousy year 2020 in terms of results, as he finished in tenth place among 14 competitors in the Eastern Conference, and this season it doesn’t look like the picture needs to improve either. But this is not his only headache.

This Monday he suffered a severe legal blow in the lawsuit he is having with Inter Milan, for infringement of his trademark. The Italian club alleges that the term Inter is synonymous with his squad and whoever wants to use his name must pay for it.

Just in 2014, the European club filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent Trademark Office, a legal battle it has just won. A final appeal to the USPTO is now underway for Inter Miami to overturn the decision, which involves a humiliating name change and the multimillion-dollar costs involved for Beckham and Co. modification of all club logos and marketing material.
