José Delgo, former DC and Marvel comic book artist, he used to be better known for his pencils Wonderful woman in the 70s and early 80s. It is now probably the most famous for its production $ 1.85 million by selling NFT, or non-expendable tokens—Of his drawings online, many of which appeared Wonderful woman and other licensed characters. DC Comics apparently not satisfied with this development.

Of course, the real problem is that DC didn’t get one he reduces art sales with his intellectual property and is concerned that other artists — working for DC or not — may try the same. So the editor, by the way of Senior Vice President of Legal Affairs Jay Kogan, sent a letter to the creative and self-employed teams employed by DC, letting them know in uncertain terms NFT they are a no-no.

After claiming that the company had big plans for the digital property market, Kogan introduced a velvet glove with an iron fist tucked inside. The letter, which filtered online above today (io9 has contacted DC for more information, but the company has declined to comment), he says in part: “While DC examines the complexities of the NFT market and we work on a reasonable and fair solution for all parties involved, including fans and collectors, please note that the offer to sell digital images that include DC intellectual property with or without NFT, whether for DC publications or out of reach, is not permitted. of your contractual commitment to DC If you are interested in including any of your DC art in an NFT program, please inform Lawrence Ganem, DC’s Vice President, Talent Services. “

There is a lot to take here and of course DC Comics absolutely owns Wonder Woman, Batman and all their characters, and has every right to want to dominate this intellectual property in the NFT industry. The company would probably do the same with the physical art fan of DC Comics characters, if that were the case you could think of any possible way to manage it continuously.

On the other hand, what do you think is likely that the company will give these artists and writers their fair share for the work they have already done, especially when you only get someone to certify a digital image like this? right, official version? And can DC actually control it? Or will there be too many people, hoping to make a lot of money with very little effort, to upload so many DC Comics images (scanned or hand-drawn) to make the NFT market unmanageable?

Non-expendable tokens they are too new — and too unpredictable — to know at this time. They are also new enough to require explanations. To put it too succinctly, it is a system where people can “own” digital resources such as images, gifs, tweets, NBA plays and more, although that doesn’t stop anyone from having their own copies, for example, on your computer or uploaded to YouTube or anything else. For example, you could take a screenshot with one of Delbo’s pieces and then have a copy of it. But the person who owns an NFT linked to digital content becomes the “official” owner of a single testimonial that cannot be duplicated.

I want to take a look at the absurdity of NFTs, which would be long and contain nothing that people have not said before and would end up equivalent to this image, which maybe someone now owns:

However, the value of NFTs is the same as paper money. Both are agreed-upon lies; that having an unexplained digital asset in a closed system makes it valuable, even though it is readily available outside of that system, or that printed sheets of paper are valuable to themselves and can be exchanged for goods and services, but when take this paper to different country, it doesn’t buy you anything.

If there are enough people who understand the idea that NFTs have value (figuratively, not literally … but I guess also literally), they will have value. At this time, its growing popularity, evidenced by the number of large companies registering to sell their goods no doubt indicates that the NFT market is heading this way.

And DC Comics will make sure get yours To share.
