Mets right-back Jacob deGrom struck out nine straight rivals Saturday against the Rockies, tying the record set by Mets legend Tom Seaver, who picked up 10 in a row in 1970.
The streak began in the second inning when it blew Josh Fonts to the first out of the stretch and ended with Fonts reaching the initial after an error in the shot by middleman Jeff McNeil in the fifth.
Seaver set the record when he beat 10 rivals in a row on April 22, 1970 against the San Diego Padres, to complete the Mets game. With Saturday’s nine, deGrom tied with Max Scherzer, Aaron Harang, Ricky Nolasc, Jake Peavy and Mickey Welch for the second-highest number of strikeouts in a row in the National League.
