New data shows that approximately half of the city’s 57,000 employees have received at least one vaccine and less than half are fully vaccinated. More than 6,000 employees in the city are requesting exemptions for religious or medical purposes.
City Council and Mayor Eric Garcetti last month passed an ordinance requiring all city employees to be vaccinated on October 19th.
The following explains how the largest departments are divided:
Los Angeles Police Department: Approximately half of the department’s 12,315 employees have been completely vaccinated.
Recreation and parks: of 8,091 employees, 3,075 have been fully vaccinated, or less than 40%.
Los Angeles Fire Department: About one-third of the department’s 3,712 employees have been completely vaccinated.

Department of Water and Energy: Of the 11,643 employees, only 3,501 have been vaccinated, or about 30%.
Mayor Eric Garcetti has warned employees seeking exemptions for invalid reasons and warned, “We will not tolerate the abuse of these exemptions by those who simply do not want to be vaccinated. For anyone considering submitting a single Request for false exemption, I strongly urge you to reconsider. “
The city now requires all city staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19, with some exceptions for medical reasons and religious beliefs. Applications for these exemptions were due on Monday this week.
Those with an exemption and not fully vaccinated will be required to take a weekly COVID-19 test if they regularly submit a city job.
Some 23,000 employees have not responded to the city’s request for information about their status.
Some 5,600 confirmed they were not vaccinated.
