Car workers of the big three who live or work in Detroit, Michigan, can now receive vaccines against COVID-19, The free Detroit press reports. The goal here is to get these workers back to work in car production to begin to further stimulate the U.S. economy, which has had serious success due to layoffs and lack of spending.
The city plans to start with employees of Stellantis’ two-story Jeep, which means 8,000 union members are currently eligible. This first deployment of vaccines also takes into account the workers of certain other Stellantis facilities. Ford and General Motors employees are also eligible, but will need to apply for vaccination.
“Manufacturing requires a large number of employees to work relatively close to each other day in and day out,” Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said. “Therefore, we considered it important to prioritize them as a group to protect them, the public and our economy.
“If you live in the city but work in Dearborn or Warren (or it doesn’t matter where you live, but you work in Detroit), you just have to call the number and get the vaccine in a matter of days.” If you think you are eligible, you can call 313-230-0505 to make an appointment. All you have to do when you apply is verify that you work for one of the carmakers in question by showing a pay stub or company ID.
For people at the Jeep plant, they will be able to work directly with their facilities to learn more about the vaccine and schedule appointments.

Detroit gives priority to Stellantis because it went to the city to organize this vaccination program, not out of any favoritism. But it looks like GM has already been in talks with the city of Detroit to move this process forward.
