The City of Detroit is expanding eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine to include anyone who lives or works in the city and must apply for work.
Previously, only certain categories of workers who applied for a job were eligible, such as teachers, postal workers, food handlers, and manufacturing employees. Now, eligibility has been extended to all local employees, as long as they live or work in the city, such as bank branch staff and other official workers.
Mayor Mike Duggan said any large employer capable of lining up at least 100 employees in advance can ask the Detroit Department of Health to conduct vaccines in situ, instead of having to travel to TCF. Employers able to bring together large groups of more than 100 employees over the course of a day can call the Detroit Means Business Call Center at (844) 333-8249 to arrange a visit to the Department of Health.
All other site workers who are now eligible should schedule the appointment by calling the city’s central vaccine scheduling number at 313-230-0505.
Announcements
Eligibility is also being expanded to include any Detroit resident 16 years of age or older who has an intellectual or developmental disability or an underlying medical condition mentioned in previous expansions. The extension also includes the caregivers and / or guardians of these people.

For greater efficiency and convenience, the city recommends that, when possible, eligible members of the same family or neighbors schedule together and arrive in the same vehicle. Group B essential workers will need to provide their employer’s name and their most recent salary to verify their eligibility.
A second vaccination is required
When scheduling the appointment, people who receive Pfizer or Moderna will be provided TWO appointment dates, one for the first dose and another for the second dose needed. Call center staff will contact each scheduled person prior to their second appointment to remind them. People will also be provided with specific instructions on when and where to get to the TCF center, where they will be required to complete a basic consent form.
Announcements
After receiving the vaccination, individuals should stay for a period of approximately 15 minutes to ensure that they do not experience any side effects. Medical staff will be available to help anyone who may experience any side effects. Appointments should last about an hour once the person arrives at their appointment.
