SEATTLE – Emerging hitter Kyle Schwarber broke the deadlock with a three-run double in the eighth inning and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners 8-4 on Tuesday to stay in the fight for wild card of the American League.
Schwarber, who ceded his place to the starting team to Alex Botxí, came out on the plate in front of reliever Drew Steckenrider with an out and full bases in the eighth chapter. His double on the right decided a tense duel with Seattle, which the day before defeated Boston thanks to a Schwarber field error.
Executioner shook off a two-run homer in the next inning at the Red Sox bat before Yohan Ramirez.
The win leaves Boston halfway through the New York Yankees and Toronto Tiles in the fight for the two American wildcards. Seattle is three wins away.
Adam Ottavino (6-3) pulled off the last out of the seventh inning for the win, while the defeat went to Joe Smith’s (2-4).
