Before Rick and Mortyend of season five this past weekend, Adult Swim all of a sudden it began to fall a series of live action shorts starring Christopher Lloyd and Jaeden Martell as an unhealthy grandfather / grandson duo. io9 was curious to learn more, so we spoke with director Paul B. Cummings.
The interesting thing about the shorts, which run for less than 15 seconds, was the smallest multiversal context in which they were accompanied in the form of Rick and Mortyreality designation codes. Although each of the clips was released with a different code that referred to several universes within the big one Rick and Morty franchise, there were few explanations of what was going on or why Rick and Morty were suddenly represented by live actors. While Lloyd’s casting made a firm assent Rick and Mortyhas links to the Return to the future trilogy, also raised the question of whether there could be more meat space Rick and Morty for the future.
When io9 spoke recently with the shorts ” director Paul B. Cummings by email, unfortunately, I could not comment on whether or how they could be placed within the actual canon of the program. He noted, however, that the bulk of what is happening to Lloyd’s Morty in each of the clips are notable moments from the animated show’s past. “Everything was pretty scripted without a lot of riffing, but when we shot‘ 100 Years ’I told Chris to just run with it and repeat the lines over and over and try to be baffled,” Cummings said. “We watched this clip of the show a few times just before we shot it.”
Cummings also described how, during the production of the shorts, Lloyd told him about “how he felt Doc Brown and Rick Sanchez were like brothers taking two very different paths in life,” which is the kind of idea that Rick and Morty has devoted a significant amount of time to delving into his latest series. Given the way the season five ends, the arc of Rick and MortyThe future narrative is up in the air, though the next chapters of the program they have already been ordered by the network.
