It seems like the new year doesn’t start without a proper ball drop at midnight. But for the second year in a row, that won’t happen in Detroit.
“The Drop,” which was to take place in downtown Beacon Park, has been canceled once again. The producers of the event told the Free Detroit Press the lack of sponsorship funding, as well as scheduling and logistics problems, led to the cancellation.
Update: Michigan First Credit Union announced that it will be the titular sponsor of the New York 2021 ball fall, making it much more likely that the event will take place next year.
Detroit’s relatively new tradition of dropping a ball with a neon-lit “D” at midnight began in 2010. It was moved to Beacon Park in 2017 after overtaking the Martius Campus. In previous years, there were tents warmed up with games and live music from 4 p.m.
