
Dr. Norman Govan, of the Laboratory of Defense Science and Technology (Dstl), has been recognized in New Year’s honors by Her Majesty the Queen 2021.
Dr. Govan, who has worked at Dstl and its predecessors for over 20 years, has been named an officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). He receives his OBE for his many years of experience in chemical weapons decontamination, including the development of specialized methodologies and skills to safely and effectively manage the hazards arising from these agents. His contribution was vital in the recovery process following the 2018 Salisbury and Amesbury incidents.
Dr Govan, who is a member of Dstl’s Biological and Radiological Chemistry Division, said: “I am truly humiliated with this award. I was immensely proud of what the recovery team achieved to get Salisbury and Amesbury back to normal. to have the privilege of working alongside some really amazing people during the operation and I am delighted to accept it on their behalf ”.
Gary Aitkenhead, chief executive of Dstl, added: “I offer my sincere congratulations to Dr. Govan. I am very proud to see our people recognized in such a prestigious way. The award is a well-deserved recognition for his dedication, professionalism. and technical excellence ”.
