Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is one of the most popular presidents in the world, despite, or perhaps in part, for his history of prejudicial comments about women, gays, and minority groups.
Leading the news: Polls suggest her daughter and successor as mayor of Davao City, Sara Duterte, is the main election of the electorate to succeed him as president in 2022. But she said Thursday that Sara would not run.
- The presidency, he said, “is not intended for women,” as they have a different “emotional configuration” than men.
- Duterte, who often complains about the miseries of her job, added that her daughter “would go through what I went through.”
What to see: Duterte is not eligible to run for re-election at the end of his six-year term, although an attempt by his allies to amend the constitution sparked speculation that he could try to stay.
- “Even if he serves it to me on a silver plate or gives me ten more years for free, I’m done,” he said Thursday.
Meanwhile, Duterte confronts him a Senate investigation into reports that indicated doses of an unapproved Chinese vaccine were smuggled into the Philippines and delivered to more than 100,000 Chinese citizens, as well as some of the soldiers assigned to guard Duterte.
- Duterte has told soldiers not to cooperate with the investigation and his office described the vaccines as a “gift” from China.
- It is necessary to emphasize: Many of the Chinese citizens in question work at the height of the game. Last year, several illegal medical clinics were discovered in the Philippines that treated Chinese citizens working in marine games.
