“I met with Dwayne this afternoon and informed him that we would release him,” Washington coach Ron Rivera said in a statement.
“I told him I think it benefits both parties that we follow different paths. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions over the last two seasons and wish him well.”
Haskins was left on the bench during Washington’s loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
His setback came a tumultuous week in which Haskins lost his role as Washington captain and was fined an undisclosed amount for violating Covid-19 team protocols.
Washington downgraded and fined Haskins after the team was informed of posts on social media showing the 23-year-old without a mask while attending his girlfriend’s birthday party.
Haskins was the team’s first-round draft pick in 2019 and 15th overall.
The former Ohio State University quarterback apologized to his team last week for his virus protocol actions, saying they were “immature and unacceptable.”
Haskins addressed Monday’s launch on his private Twitter account, according to ESPN and several outlets, saying he took “full responsibility for not meeting the standards of an NFL QB and will become a better player and player because of this experience “.
Washington closes the regular season this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles in hopes that a playoff spot is still alive.
