Philadelphia sought permission from the Patriots to speak with their offensive coordinator for the head coaching vacancy
The Philadelphia Eagles added a new candidate to their roster for the head coaching position.
This Saturday the Eagles asked New England Patriots for permission to interview offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, According to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Philadelphia is expected to conduct the interview Sunday, sources told Schefter.
McDaniels has previous experience as head coach after his two-season spell with the Denver Broncos between 2009 and 2010, where he amassed an 11-17 record..
McDaniels is currently in his second stint as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator, where he was originally from 2006 to 2008, before leaving for Denver. In 2011 he was offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams and in 2012 returned to New England.
The Patriots have won six Super Bowls (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI and LIII) with McDaniels at the forefront of their offense.
In addition to McDaniels, the Eagles also requested permission to interview Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric BieniemyHowever, they have to wait until the end of the Chiefs’ participation in the playoffs to conduct the interview.
The rest of the candidates for the Eagles’ head coaching vacancy are Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles; Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore; Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley; and Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady.
This week the Eagles fired coach Doug Pederson after ending the campaign with a 4-11-1 record and generating controversy in the quarterback position by sending the bench to Carson Wentz for rookie Jalen Hurts, who was seated in the second half of the last game of the regular season against Washington, being replaced by Nate Südfeld.
So far, three of the teams that fired their head coach in the 2020 season have named their new coach: the Jacksonville Jaguars with Urban Meyer, the New York Jets with Robert Saleh and the Atlanta Falcons with Arthur Smith.
