Education extends “to go” school canteen program until June

He Department of Education received permission to extend aid to children between 1 and 18 years old, the secretary reported today, Wednesday Eligio Hernández Pérez.

In a statement, the official explained that the determination must be made in the wake of the pandemic by Covid-19, the Food and Nutrition Services program of the Federal Department of Agriculture (USDA). , granted a waiver to extend the Summer Food Service Program (PSAV) which it traditionally offers during the months of June to July and which is extended to all children and young people on the Island. It was originally until December 31, 2020, but was extended until June of next year.

“We thank and welcome the approval of the continuation of the service by the federal government. We urge all families between the ages of 1 and 18 to continue sponsoring the ‘to go’ lunch,” he said. Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced.

Daily, about 50,000 minors received a ration of food made by school canteen employees and selected from a balanced menu prepared by DE nutritionists.

Since May, when it began handing out “to go” lunches, more than 5.2 million servings have been served to children between the ages of 1 and 18.

“We welcome this news that will continue the lunch service that many families of students in the public system and throughout the island have benefited in these difficult times due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Hernandez Pérez and recorded that to receive food you do not have to register in advance, or have minors enrolled in the public education system. Just go to the dining room closest to your residence and pick it up. Schedules are set by school communities, so it is recommended that you contact school principals to find out.

Hernández Pérez also recorded that, as will happen every year and as established in the academic calendar, there would be an administrative break for school staff during the festive season. This includes food service workers, so you should not have “on the go” service from December 23, 2020 to January 8, 2021. The service will resume on Monday, January 11, 2021, the day on what starts the second semester.
