El Salvador isolates a traveler with coronavirus and imposes a fine on the airline

A traveler who entered El Salvador from Houston, USA, with a positive result for coronavirus was isolated, the director of the General Directorate of Migration and Aliens, Ricardo Cucalón, reported on Monday.

Cucalón pointed out in an interview on a local radio station that an airline, the name of which was not disclosed, allowed a person to travel to El Salvador with a positive coronavirus test.

He explained, without specifying the date of entry of the passenger or his nationality, that “when identifying the person who traveled with a positive test of covid-19 the corresponding preventive measures were applied and immediately activated the protocols and moved to an isolation area that is at the airport, ”from El Salvador.

Cucalón indicated that Migration together with personnel of the Ministry of Health (MINSAL) “were able to identify the passengers of this flight from Houston and their state of health has been verified, and we already have 58 people located” .

He added that a sanction process is already being carried out against the airline and that “yesterday (Sunday) the corresponding fine was notified, which is the largest sanction,” he added.

Salvador Arnulfo Romero International Airport in El Salvador reactivated its commercial flight operations in September last year, after nearly six months of being paralyzed by the coronavirus pandemic, with travelers from all countries.

However, in December, people from South Africa and the United Kingdom were banned from entering El Salvador due to the new variant of the coronavirus detected in the latter country, which makes it more contagious.

El Salvador recorded an increase in daily cases and already exceeded 300 infections on January 6 when 303 positives were detected on that day. Then 307, 319 and 331 cases were recorded on January 7, 8 and 9, respectively.

In total, El Salvador has 48,905 confirmed cases of covid-19, of which 4,121 are active, 1,428 people have died and 43,356 Salvadorans have been discharged, according to the official website of the Ministry of Health, covid19.gob .sv. ?
