With the arrival of spring, the world begins to wake up once more. Flowers bloom, birds chirp, and deer break their asses on the sidewalks in order to bang their heads on the garage doors.
This last, wonderful demonstration of the general feeling of optimism and joy of the season was captured on video by the YouTube channel ssnapier through such stunning images that we can almost hear David Attenborough’s narration as he plays. For a few seconds, we only see an entrance path and some movement in the sun-bleached stretch on the edge of the camera frame. Then comes a deer in barrelconsidering an apparent mission to throw yourself at the garage door as hard as possible. The natural majesty of the herd has full effect as it sinks against the door with a distorted shock just before a few more deer, sliding on the pavement, falling on top of each other and returning to whom he knows where, his complete goal.
There is silence for a moment before a man’s voice is heard from inside the house shouting at a dog to calm down and exclaim, with a perfect comic moment: “What the fuck?”
Clearly, she is overwhelmed by the beauty of what she has just been lucky enough to witness: a ballet choreographed by nature and performed with mysterious grace by the beautiful children of planet Earth.
Some people in the video comments suggest that the deer could not see where they were going because the sun was too bright and the garage door was painted light. This seems very possible, but we also know that it is as important to take the unpredictable artistry of the natural world in its own terms as to try to explain it with scientific foundations. How important is the description of a rainbow next to seeing one with your own eyes? Does knowing the evolutionary motifs of the cardinal’s bright red feathers help make the bird look more impressive? No. And the same applies to this other remarkable sample of the spectacular and encouraging drive of an animal to collide with a stationary object at full speed.
