Epic acquires Rad game tools

Epic Games announced today that it has acquired Rad Game Tools.

The Kirkland, Washington-based suit offers a variety of programs for game developers, including the Bink video codec, Oodle data compression, and telemetry performance visualization.

“Rad team members will work closely with Epic’s rendering, animation, insights and audio teams, integrating key technology and enhancements into Unreal Engine and beyond,” Epic said.

“The combination of Rad and Epic strengths will allow more developers to have access to tools that make their games load and download faster and offer their players a better quality gaming and video experience.”

Despite the acquisition, Rad will continue to work with companies beyond Epic, whether they use Unreal Engine or not.

Rad was founded in 1988 and also has a Japanese office established in 2008. Its products have been used in about 25,000 sets.

The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Rad’s deal continues with a busy stretch for Epic on the acquisitions front. Since early 2019, Epic has acquired 3Lateral, Agog Labs, Psyonix, Twinmotion, Houseparty, Quixel, Cubic Motion, Hyprsense and SuperAwesome.

Earlier this week it also acquired a mall in North Carolina to serve as its future headquarters.
