Epic games to compensate Fortnite and Rocket League Loot Box buyers after a class action lawsuit

After reaching an agreement following a class action lawsuit related to random loot, Epic Games has revealed that it will grant currency to the game to affected Fortnite and Rocket League players.

According to details on a case settlement website, the lawsuit alleges that “Epic Games violated state consumer protection laws, prevented minors from exercising their contractual disclaimer rights and negligently misrepresented the value of their elements of the game in relation to its Fortnite and Rocket League Video Games “. (thanks Eurogamer).

Epic has denied “all allegations of offenses, liability and damages claimed in the action,” also denying that the action “would be appropriate for class treatment” if the matter were to be tried. Instead, “to avoid the time, expense, and uncertainty of litigation,” the Court has granted preliminary approval of the detailed agreement on the website.

So what does this mean for players? Well, Epic says that any Fortnite: Save the World player who has purchased a Loot Flame booty loot with random items will automatically receive 1,000 V-Bucks into their account. Similarly, 1,000 credits will be given to any Rocket League player who has purchased a box of random items (both items have been removed from their respective games). Compensation will be added to all affected accounts worldwide over the next few days.

The settlement website also allows U.S. players to file a claim form for additional benefits if they believe their purchase “results in a consumer fraud claim, breach of contract, or other claim for damages.” or if “they want to get a partial refund for a purchase made as a minor.” Epic has set aside $ 26.5 million to address those claims.
