Epidemiologist Fabiola Creu is internationally recognized for her work in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic

The President of the Association of Mayors of Puerto Rico, Luis Javier Hernández, celebrated the distinction awarded to the epidemiologist of the Municipality, Fabiola Cruz López in the international event ‘Experience Puerto Rico, which was held this past week in Palmas de Mar, Humacao.

“Precisely the event was dedicated to our beloved Fabiola Cruz López. Personally I was very proud to see how in other countries also recognize the work done in the face of the pandemic of the Covid-19 by the City Avancina “We are very grateful to Fabiola and to the entire team for continuing to teach the fight against the pandemic.”

The ‘Puerto Rico Experience’ event is an initiative of local governments in the Caribbean and Latin America, which serves as a platform for organizations such as the Federation of Latin American Cities, Municipalities and Associations (FLACMA) to share their best management practices. of local governments with governments and associations from across the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Just last year, the America Newspaper Group (GDA) recognized the medical community as a Person of the Year 2020 and reviewed the work of this Puerto Rican epidemiologist in the pandemic. Cruz López is known for structuring the Covid-19 contagion tracking system, which began in Villalba and was later applied throughout Puerto Rico. Cruz López, 27, is a doctoral student at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico Fabiola (UPR).

The tracking system implemented by the mayor of Villalba, Luis Hernández, included in its beginnings last year, an epidemiologist, four social workers and a psychologist at a rate of every 25,000 inhabitants. The mayor pointed out the importance of having municipalities enter the system quickly, in order to create uniformity with regard to data on the transmission of this virus. “The biggest advantage is that we were able to speak in a single language, so that the numbers of Health and those of the municipalities were the same,” he said.

The initial Villalbeña initiative was joined by the signing of a collaborative agreement with the non-profit organization of the Trust for Science, Technology and Research of Puerto Rico and its program “Puerto Rico Public Health Trust” (PRPHT) to track infected patients. “This agreement integrated efforts to improve strategies to prevent future infections, save lives and establish phases,” the lawyer added.
