ERCOT says rotary shutdowns are occurring in Texas following level 3 energy emergency alert

The Texas Electrical Reliability Council (ERCOT) has issued an energy emergency alert (level 3) for the state, meaning rotary shutdowns are occurring to reduce demand for the electrical system.

“We urge jeans to put safety first during this time,” ERCOT said in a tweet early Monday morning.

ERCOT says traffic lights and other infrastructure may be temporarily without electricity.

ERCOT urged jeans to reduce their electricity consumption before sending the level 3 energy emergency alert tweet. It had warned that rotary interruptions would be needed to protect the electrical system.

According to ERCOT, you can help reduce electricity consumption:

  • Adjust the thermostats to 68 degrees when you are at home or as low as is tolerable.

  • Adjust the ceiling fans in the winter by running them clockwise to bring the hot air down.

  • Avoid using large appliances (i.e. ovens, washing machines, and dishwashers).

  • Make sure the doors and windows are properly sealed. Any light that passes through the door indicates a penetration of cold air entering the home.

  • Turn off lights, computers, and other electronic devices whenever possible.
