The Vikings are a team locked in a big quarterback contract. That hasn’t stopped some speculation about Kirk Cousins moving this low season, though it should be noted that rumors about Cousins ’trade have been dispelled.
ESPN’s Courtney Cronin was commissioned to boldly predict the Vikings. Your choice? Let the Vikings be part of the free agency quarterback carousel. Here is what he wrote:
“If Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers really want Kirk Cousins, now is the time for Minnesota to run a business that will create freedom to rebuild other parts of the list. The Vikings could come out of the financial commitment they made with Cousins when he signed a two-year extension last March that would mean a $ 31 million limit for 2021 and follow a different direction in the position. If it’s Jimmy Garoppolo and a second-round selection (they don’t currently have one), the Vikings should jump at the chance. “
I want to preface it by saying that I think Cousins is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Also, the team’s regression in 2020 was not primarily his fault. That said, I think if the Vikings could get out of Cousins in the long run, the future of the franchise would be better. Cousins is good, but not among the league’s elite quarterbacks. I used to think he could theoretically be good enough for Minnesota to make a deep playoffs and win a Super Bowl. But now I’m not so sure. It would be good for the team to keep looking for a quarterback, no matter how long it takes.
