ESPN’s latest NFL power ranking is causing a bit of a stir among fans. Writer Mike Clay not only has the San Francisco 49ers ranked No. 15 in the league, but he also has them as the last NFC West representative.
While the 49ers and Los Angeles Rams are favorites of the division winners, the Seattle Seahawks surprisingly come in at No. 6, the best place among the four teams in the NFC West. The Los Angeles Rams can be found six places later at number 12. Even the Arizona Cardinals are ranked higher than San Francisco. A higher place, in fact, at number 14.
So why Clay’s low rating? He accuses the harsh division. The four NFC West teams are in Clay’s top 15, but the decision to list the Niners created the latest conversation on social media. Yes, San Francisco has suffered seasons lost in five of the last six years. Still, the list looks more like that of the 2019 Super Bowl contestant than those of head coach Kyle Shanahan’s previous squads or last season’s exhausted injuries.
Clay even admits the healthiest 49ers should get a rebound.
“The Niners have a fantastic offensive line and a good core of offensive goals led by George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, but it remains to be seen how much they get out of the quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo / Trey Lance situation.” wrote Clay.
The strength of the team can be its defense and its deep defensive line, which will see the return of passing runners Nick Bosa and Dee Ford. They both missed most of last season due to injuries. There are secondary concerns, however, and the team has lost its defensive coordinator for the past four years.
“The defense has more gaps than in years past and coordinator Robert Saleh is gone, but stellar power remains in the form of Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Fred Warner, Jason Verrett and Jimmie Ward,” Clay added. “This is a decent list that will have to overcome a tough division to find its way back to the playoffs.”

ESPN: NFC West is so good that it could have four playoff teams

How good is NFC West expected to be this season? Those who do odds have a hard time predicting whether it will be the San Francisco 49ers or the Los Angeles Rams who will win the division. Everyone’s lists are loaded with talent. Then you have the Seattle Seahawks, who always seem to be in contention thanks to quarterback Russell Wilson and head coach Pete Carroll. “And the Cardinals, don’t forget, were 6-3 and a strong playoff contender last season after the ridiculous catch of game-winning DeAndre Hopkins, Hail Mary vs. the Bills,” wrote ESPN’s Dan Graziano . “I doubt a lot of people will choose them to win this division,

Greg Cosell identifies a flaw with 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance
Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance threw an interception during Sunday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Each release sparked debate on social media. Did the quarterback throw the football out of reach or did the great receiver fail to make the big play? Or was it a bit of both? Analyst Greg Cosell sided with the receivers. In the situations in which Garoppolo and Lance found themselves, the placement of the ball should have been better. “Whenever a ball hits a receiver’s hand, everyone says, ‘Oh, I should grab it,'” Cosell said this week on The Rich Eisen Show. “And that’s always easy to say, but when you’re clean in your pocket and the receiver is open in this league, you have to put it in your hands. This is the NFL

Kyle Shanahan, of the 49ers, reveals the hurdle Trey Lance still has to overcome
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has joined KNBR’s Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks program this afternoon. No, he did not officially announce his starting quarterback. Sorry. Nor would he advertise his quarterback. The hosts tried to get this information from the 49ers coach. “I’m going to save this for Sunday, week 1 as well,” Shanahan stated. Shanahan did argue about Trey Lance. The coach feels that his rookie quarterback is progressing well. Nothing Shanahan said would indicate that Lance is still ready to take on the offense, but the coach is pleased with the quarterback’s progress in learning the game book. However, there is much more to it than knowing the game book inside and out

ESPN: Jimmy Garoppolo’s impending transition to Trey Lance makes 49ers playoff projections ‘faint’
ESPN’s Kevin Seifert made 10 predictions for the 2021 season. One was that San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden would avoid any deserving scrutiny. Gruden, of course, has yet to set a record for victories since becoming the Raiders head coach in 2018. On the other hand, Shanahan has led the 49ers to a Super Bowl and was at the top of a championship during the 2019 season. But of course, this was his only winning season during his four-year tenure so far. Still, Seifert believes the two coaches are likely to be safe. The 49ers will
