Etecsa announces service outages this year

The Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) reported on Monday that its services would be affected this year-end due to the monetary unification recently announced by the Cuban government.

“ETECSA reports effects on the operation of the services, the commercial network and Transfermóvil during the days of end and beginning of the year, for tasks of configuration in the systems to adapt them to the new tariffs”, published the monopoly of the communications Cubans on their official Facebook page.

In the same publication you can see several graphic images that describe the effects. The Transfermóvil electronic payment platform will be disabled on Wednesday 30 December, from 6:00 PM.

On December 30 and 31, the company’s commercial offices will work limited hours, until 4:30 pm on the first day and until 12:30 pm on the second. On January 1, 2 and 3, its commercial network will not be open to the public, until its usual opening hours are restored on January 4.

Due to the setting of new rates, this January 1 will be suspended for one hour (from 5:00 am to 6:00 am) mobile phone services (Voice and text messaging), top-ups, and internet at points of wifi and Nauta Llar. While the Own cards will be out of service from 5:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Mobile data packet navigation, landline and emergency calls from mobile phones (104 ambulances, 105 firefighters, 106 police) will remain unaffected.

In addition, from January 1, 2021, all payments that ETECSA will receive at its commercial offices will be in Cuban pesos (CUP).

This latest information, already announced by ETECSA on December 24, was controversial for several Facebook users, as the company will continue to sell electronic equipment such as mobile phones or cordless phones in dollars

“Everything is clear. The only thing I don’t understand is that if the stores are still getting worm and giving back to MN why aren’t you going to do it? And …. To these people who out of absolute need need to acquire a phone and mobile Why don’t they sell it the same in worm and / or national currency? What a bad service, for God’s sake! “, said user Frank Gómez Cañibano.

To which the company replied that it was not “provided in the entities authorized for the collection of CUC” that the Cuban state had for an additional 6 months, after the monetary unification was carried out this first of January. ETECSA’s response only shifts the responsibility to the island’s government, and demonstrates its dependence and subordination to it.
