Italy’s Etna volcano, the most active volcano in Europe, erupted on Tuesday creating a source of lava and sending plumes of orange smoke into the sky.
The eruption forced the temporary closure of Catania Catania airport, which often happens when the volcano is active.
No injuries or deaths were reported.
Residents in the village of Pedara, near the crater, said it was throwing not only ash but also large chunks of volcanic stones all over the area.
“It was a rain of stones,” said Letizia Olivieri, a resident of the Associated Press. “Something I’ve never seen in my entire life.”
The Sicilian people were in emergency mode, the mayor said, while residents and municipal teams were working to clean up the ashes on the street Wednesday.
