Mexico City- It’s been almost 60 years since these titans, two of the most shocking icons of film pop culture, clashed in a colossal fight for the first time. A radioactive giant lizard, mysterious as an old samurai, against a colossal ape, intelligent and with human emotions.

But unlike the cult film of the nephew Ishiro Honda, here will be a clear and undisputed winner, promises Adam Wingard, the director of the highly anticipated Godzilla vs Kong.

“No matter who loses, we won as an audience. The fun is to see them fight. Also, I think we managed to come up with a story that is satisfying even though we choose a winner.

“It was important to me that there was no tie in this film. If you look at the original (from 1962), the biggest criticism I can make is that it leaves the performance who won,” reflects the director (Death Note) in interview.

Fourth installment of the so-called MonsterVerse, the blockbuster Godzilla vs Kong will be released in Mexican cinemas on Wednesday. It is one of the biggest headlines released during the pandemic, a blow to revive the industry.

“This film is a show, a show. Its characters, its design, its effects. I think it’s going to motivate people to reconnect with going to the movies. There are certain films that I could see in the home, but this is not one of them. It happened to me: to remember how important cinema is to us “, meditates Eiza González, one of the stars of the cast.

The actress plays Maia, daughter of Walter Simmons (Demian Bichir), a tech mogul. He is convinced that titans, particularly Godzilla, with erratic behavior, are a problem that needs to be addressed.

It is not uncommon for two Mexicans to play such important roles in a Hollywood film of this magnitude. Equally curious is that they do so in a production where the real stars are giant monsters, but that does not generate relaxation of their interpretive commitment.

“For me it’s the same responsibility. I’ve never felt that it’s a burden to carry the weight of a story or just be a smaller part of it. The most interesting aspect of that is the use of imagination, the fundamental tool for any actor, and putting it into practice in this way seems to me a sensational gymnastics, ”says Bichir.

The story takes place 5 years after Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and 51 after Kong: Skull Island (2017). He explores the concept of the Empty Land, which has occupied the thinking of ancient and great civilizations of literature (Jules Verne).

“The idea is that’s where the Titans originated, and we have to go there, (the secret organization) Monarch wants to go there to make sure they’re still a threat to humanity,” Rebecca Hall advances, played by Dr. Ilene Andrews, a Kong scholar.

As for combat, here are the larger versions of the monsters in terms of real action cinema. Godzilla, 120 meters, is unwilling to have two living alfalfa. Kong, 102, doesn’t plan to kneel in front of anyone.

They will collide twice in the feature film, the first of them in the ocean, a kind of temptation, says Wingard.

“The final battle (in Hong Kong) is the real fight. They say, ‘Okay, let’s break up.’ You’d think in a city you’re on Godzilla ground, because we’re used to that this is the ground where you fight.

“However, we use the city as a big jungle for Kong, with buildings instead of trees. He can use his intelligence against Godzilla and take advantage of the surroundings,” he slides.
