CONCORD, NH (AP) – Evidence confirmed Friday that a bleeding ulcer was the cause of the simple symptoms of New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, his chief of staff said.
Sununu was admitted to a hospital earlier in the day after showing fluid symptoms since Wednesday. It had been negative three times to detect COVID-19.
“Evidence has confirmed that a bleeding ulcer caused the symptoms the governor has experienced this week,” Chief of Staff Jayne Millerick said in a statement. “After the blood transfusion today, he is doing much better. He is very grateful to the staff at Portsmouth Hospital for their excellent care and to everyone who donates blood. As a blood donor, he is happy to have come forward and thanked everyone who does the same. ”
It was not immediately known how long Sununu would remain hospitalized.
Sununu, a Republican, had said Wednesday he was negative for COVID-19, hours after his office said he was not feeling well, postponed a meeting and began isolating himself.
“I woke up with COVID-like symptoms and, with great caution, did two rapid antigen tests, which turned negative, and then I did a PCR test, which confirmed the negative,” Sununu had said. “I’m going to rest and hope to return to the State House soon!”
Sununu, 46, is fully vaccinated against COVID-19. On April 10 he received the Johnson & Johnson unique vaccine.
He made a trip to Kentucky on Monday to see how officials are facing an increase in COVID cases.
State Senate President Chuck Morse, a Republican, said he hopes Sununu will recover quickly.
“The entire Senate sends him his best wishes and I know people across New Hampshire keep him in their prayers,” he said in a statement.
