Pet owner Byron Thanarayen said he and his wife Melissa were watching the security camera by the pool to see what the two dogs might have been doing.
He said: “We tried to find clues as to where the head might have gotten wet. We thought he might have submerged his head in water, but at home there was no disaster to support that suggestion.
“It was heartbreaking to see him. Today we still struggle to watch this video, just thinking about what might have happened if Jessie wasn’t there.
After the stressful test, the couple sinks into the garden seemingly baffled by what happened.
Byron added that the heroic dog was a troubled rescue dog adopted by the couple four years ago.
The couple is her third adoptive family after her previous foster children returned her to the shelter.
Thanarayen said previous owners complained that Jessie was difficult with other animals, but “got along with the other two dogs in the word.”
He added: “I am very proud of her, considering she is the youngest. Our dogs know how to swim, but they always swim with us and not when we are not with them.
To prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, the couple is now hiring workers to install a deck for their pool.
