WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Microsoft was hacked as part of an alleged Russian campaign that has affected several US government agencies taking advantage of widespread use of SolarWinds Corp. software, according to people familiar with the matter.

As with SolarWinds network management software, Microsoft’s own products were then used to promote attacks on others, according to people.

It was not immediately known how many Microsoft users were affected by the contaminated products. The Department of Homeland Security, which said earlier Thursday that hackers used multiple methods of entry, is continuing to investigate.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
