False claims about high-level support

Farmers in India have been protesting since late November

Farmers’ struggles in India over new pricing laws show no signs of abating.

The controversy has become more politicized as thousands of farmers with their tractors and other machinery block access roads around the capital Delhi.

Both sides have sought to restrict social media coverage, and we have seen attempts to spread misinformation about well-known personalities in the controversy.

Did Obama say it was a shame to meet Modi?

Our first example is former US President Barack Obama, who met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several occasions during his tenure.

Social media posts have surfaced that show a picture of the two together, with Mr Obama now regretting meeting Mr Modi at the White House in 2014.

Some of these posts have hashtags in support of the peasant struggles.

The film is real enough, from a real encounter between the two that year.

However, the Twitter post is fake. The text was misspelled in poor English, and President Obama’s Twitter profile appears to have been edited.

A test again through Mr Obama’s Twitter timeline shows that he has had no such tweets since the protests began last month.

Justin Trudeau on a ‘unity show’?

The next is about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has been embroiled in controversy since he expressed concern about the Indian government’s response to the protests.

It publicly condemned the Indian government.

That issue aside, some took to social media to spread what was a false image of Mr Trudeau, who said it showed him sitting with a group of Sikhs (many peasant Sikhs in India) at the solidarity event.

Canada has significant Indian descent, including many Sikhs.

But this film is misleading because it is at least five years old.

This was confirmed to the BBC by the Prime Minister’s Office, who pointed out that Mr Trudeau is now playing with a beard, whereas the picture shows him without a beard.

This is from his visit to a Sikh religious center in Ottawa in November 2015. There is a local news report about the arrival.

Regardless of Mr Trudeau’s views on the current protests in India, this photograph has been used from its proper context.

A senior Indian minister did not change pages

It may come as a surprise to know that Rajnath Singh, a senior member of the government and leader of the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), actually supports the struggles of the peasantry.

A video of him doing rounds on social media claims to show it.

The screen grab of the Rajnath Singh video is named "Old video"

In the video, Mr Singh, who is also the defense minister, can be heard saying, “If I had known about this protest in advance, I would have come here and offered my support the same day.”

Some posts linking to this video claim that the peasant uprising has exposed “a major split within the BJP”.

But a Google search reveals that this is an old video from 2013, when Mr Singh was in opposition to supporting farmers against the then Congress-led government.

Mr Singh delivered a speech at the time, supporting their demand for a stable source of income, which is available on his official website.

It is worth noting that Mr Singh, a former agriculture minister with an agricultural background, said in October that the current government would “do nothing against the interests of farmers”.

Is Punjab’s top politician working against farmers?

Our last example is about Amarinder Singh, a Congress politician who will be the next Chief Minister of Punjab with many farmers, and Mukesh Ambani, one of India’s best business tycoons.

Social media posts with the image of the two shaking hands – falsely – claim that the farmers met just a day before the start of a nationwide strike to assert their demands.

The text in one post asks: “On the one hand, Congress supports the agitating peasantry, and on the other it meets businessmen like Mr. Ambani … what kind of politics is this?”

Mr Singh – despite his party’s public support for farmers – is working with the interests of the private sector so they can benefit from changes in agricultural laws.

But since the film was three years old, since October 2017, Mr. Singh has been discussing investment opportunities with Mr. Ambani in Punjab.

It is also wrong to say, like social media posts, that Mr Singh has accepted the government’s latest plan – which was rejected by farmers – to dilute some of the rules in the new agricultural laws.

Mr Singh continues to support their demand for the complete repeal of the new laws.
