Miami.
Elvis Harold Reyes, a false lawyer of immigration that deceived the Hispanic community and filed more than 215 fraudulent asylum applications for a total cost in excess of $ 1 million, pleaded guilty to postal fraud and identity theft, according to documents judicial to which Efe had access today.
Reyes, 56, pleaded guilty Tuesday to the judge Amanda Arnold Sansone and faces a maximum sentence of twenty years in a federal prison for postal fraud and another two years for aggravated identity theft.
According to the South Florida District Attorney’s Office, the Latino approached undocumented immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries seeking Florida driver’s licenses and work permits, according to court documents.
Reyes disguised himself as an immigration lawyer despite lacking a license and provided “false, inaccurate and incomplete” legal and immigration advice to victims in order to induce them to hire his services.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office explained that the victims hired and paid Reis to represent them in aspects related to immigration before the Citizenship and Immigration Service of the United States (USCIS) and other migration agencies.
Reyes filed fraudulent immigration applications against a number of victims seeking asylum protection and detained deportation orders under the United Nations Convention against Torture.
In doing so, Reis falsified answers to questions in asylum applications, fabricating stories about threats, persecution, and the path of applicants to return to their countries of origin.
