Family angry after grandfather denied Ivermectin death over COVID-19, despite judges’ order to administer drugs

SUGAR LAND – There is much controversy over the use of the drug Ivermectin to treat COVID-19.

On Tuesday, a group of pro-treatment people protested outside the Hermann Memorial in Sugarland.

Meanwhile, doctors and hospital leaders said there is a good reason they do not use the drug to treat COVID.

Gabrielle Snider led the rally on Tuesday. She is in the process of making funeral arrangements for her grandfather, Pete Lopez, who recently celebrated her 74th birthday. Lopez died Monday after more than a month of fighting with COVID-19.

Lopez’s family had previously filed a lawsuit to be able to use the drug Ivermectin to treat their condition and said a judge ruled in their favor.

Snider claims another VA doctor approved the use, but Hermann Memorial would not.

Judicial records do not reveal whether Lopez was vaccinated or not. KPRC 2 asked Snider about her grandfather’s vaccination status, but she did not respond, saying she believes the information is irrelevant to the level of care she received. He said he felt his grandfather’s death could have been prevented.

“We will never know if this medicine would have worked or not. A judge decided in favor of my family to administer a prescription (Ivermectin) and my grandfather died yesterday, ”said Snider.

A group of people who also believe in the use of the drug Ivermectin to treat patients with COVID-19 joined Snider outside Hermann Memorial Hospital.

Ivermectin is approved for animals and in specific doses for humans to eliminate parasites.

“If you want to use Ivermectin, this is your choice. If they want to use hydroxychloroquine, then this is their choice, “said Chiquita Taylor.

Memorial Hermann said that administering Ivermectin by COVID-19 goes against the clinical judgment of his doctors and issued the following statement:

“Memorial Hermann cannot comment on pending litigation or specific cases due to patient privacy laws. It is important to note that physicians diagnose and treat patients in accordance with best medical practices. The role of medical providers is to determine safe and effective treatment courses for patients and then to help patients and their loved ones, where appropriate, make informed decisions about available treatment options. The FDA has not authorized or approved ivermectin for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19. Currently available data do not demonstrate that ivermectin is safe or effective against COVID-19 infection. Outside of ongoing clinical trials, the FDA, CDC, and the WHO discourage the use of ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19. Even a life lost against COVID-19 is too much. At this time, COVID-19 is a disease of unvaccinated individuals and serious illness and death can be prevented by vaccination. We urge all members of our community to get vaccinated if they have not done so. “Snider says he will continue to fight to use Ivermectin to treat COVID-19.”
