There was a lot of excitement for Horizon Forbidden West pre-orders to be released this week, but as with so many things Sony has been doing lately, the announcement has been hit by a stronger controversy. The company confirmed that to get both the PlayStation 5 and PS4 versions of the sequel, you’ll need to buy Digital Deluxe, Collector’s or Regalla Editions.
Many had assumed that the update would be free, like so many other games, due to the language the platform owner had used last year. However, reviewing the PS blog posts of the time, it is revealed that the company was very careful with its selection of words: “The PS4 digital versions of the release games include a free upgrade to both PS5 consoles, while PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade to the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive. ” Just throw games, you see.
Still, it’s not hard to understand why fans feel hard to do here, we’ve even assumed that Horizon Forbidden West would offer a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5. To be fair, while social media can be toxic at best, many of the requests have a thoughtful wording: “Address the current situation with the upgrade system between PS4 and PS5.” said a fan. “The PlayStation community is concerned about that.” Another addition: “As a loyal PlayStation fan, it’s frustrating to feel like you’re feeling drained to the last penny when we’re already spending so much time and money on your platform.”
Sony has already backtracked on a number of questionable decisions this year, so it wouldn’t surprise us if we came up with a solution here. Offering a $ 9.99 upgrade fee from PS4 to PS5 would be far from ideal, but in our opinion it could go a long way; we contacted the platform owner about this, and it looks like he has no plans to offer anything like it right now.
