Alex Murdaugh, whose wife and son were killed nearly three months ago in an unresolved case that has received international attention, has been shot dead in Hampton County.
Alex Murdaugh was shot in the head on Sept. 4 while changing his tire in Hampton County, according to his attorney, Jim Griffin, of Columbia’s Griffin Davis firm.
Griffin said the shots were fired from a truck that had passed Murdaugh down the road and was circling around while working on his vehicle.
Alex Murdaugh called his brother, Randy, to report the shooting around 2:15 p.m., Griffin said. Alex Murdaugh was flown to South Carolina Medical University Hospital, where he is being treated.
Randy Murdaugh has been unable to enter the hospital due to COVID-19 restrictions, Griffin said, but Alex Murdaugh has been able to communicate with him by phone, “which is obviously an encouraging sign.”
Griffin said the state police division, which is investigating the killings of Alex Murdaugh’s wife and son, has been at the scene of the shootings and at the hospital.
Tommy Crosby, a spokesman for the agency, said the Hampton County sheriff’s office has asked the agency to investigate a shooting in Hampton County. I didn’t want to confirm that Alex Murdaugh was the victim.
“The Murdaugh family has suffered more than any family could have imagined,” a Murdaugh family spokesman said in a statement. “We hope Alex recovers and asks for privacy while he recovers.”
Alex Murdaugh’s law firm, PMPED Law Firm, founded by Randolph Murdaugh in 1910, issued a statement to The Post and Courier stating it would have no comment on September 4th.
In addition to the law firm, three generations of Murdaughs were the region’s top prosecutor, a position they held collectively for more than eight decades.
Alex Murdaugh called 911 on the night of June 7 after finding his wife, Maggie, 52, and his son, Paul, 22, dead from multiple gunshot wounds near a kennel in the exterior of the family residence at 4147 Moselle Road.
No one has been arrested for the crime, although the Murdaugh family offered a $ 100,000 reward for information that led to the arrest of the case. It was unclear on Sept. 4 if Alex Murdaugh’s shooting was related.
On August 25, the circuit’s 14th attorney, Duffie Stone, withdrew from the June murder investigation, citing new developments in the case that created a conflict for his office to remain involved.
Stone did not say what news of the case motivated his decision.
