FEMA agreed to allocate $ 3.7 billion to repair AAA facilities damaged by Hurricane Maria

Washington dc – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) authorized $ 3.7 billion for the reconstruction of the Aqueduct and Sewerage Authority (AAA) facilities that were damaged by Hurricane Maria.

Both Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia and Washington-based commissioner Jenniffer Gonzalez said outgoing FEMA chief Peter Gaynor called them to provide information.

“These funds are needed to build a modern and efficient infrastructure for our Puerto Rican people,” said Commissioner Gonzalez.

The $ 3.7 billion would add to the $ 11.524 billion agreed in September for the permanent repair of electrical and educational system structures, following Hurricane Maria.

Projects will be funded through section 428 which requires setting the cost of permanent works.

On the 24th, the then executive director of the Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3) of Puerto Rico, Ottmar Chávez Piñero, reported that FEMA extended until December 31 ‘this year the period for reaching agreements under section 428.

These agreements were originally supposed to be reached by October 2019.

In mid-December, Commissioner González had indicated that an agreement had been reached on the AAA allocations and that it would be announced by Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced and the White House Coordinator for the Reconstruction of Puerto Rico. , Peter Brown.

However, Vázquez Garced ended his duties without announcing the final agreement on the allocations by the AAA.
