The 39-year-old is an avid cyclist returning to Formula 1 racing this year. The return of the Spaniard comes less than two years after he announced he would leave the sport.
The pre-season tests for the next F1 season will be held in Bahrain from 12 to 14 March before the first race in Bahrain on 28 March.
Alonso was involved in a crash in January 2020 during the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia, when his Toyota Hilux was thrown into the air after hitting a sand dune at an awkward angle. The vehicle rolled twice before stopping. Neither Alonso nor his co-driver, Marc Coma, were injured.
Veteran driver Alonso has won 314 major awards in his F1 career, achieving 32 victories and 97 podiums (both his victories and podiums place him in sixth place on the all-time list) in three teams: Renault, McLaren and Ferrari – and his return will mark the first time a driver has three separate seasons with a single F1 team (2003-06, 2008-09 and from 2021).
He was world champion in 2005 and 2006.
