First batch of coronavirus vaccines delivered in Greece

The first 9,750 doses of the Pfizer-BioΝTech coronavirus vaccine against Covid-19 arrived in Greece very safely on Christmas Day.

The vaccines will be stored in special areas that meet all drug storage specifications and, from there, will be distributed to the 450 vaccination centers that will be put into operation gradually.

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) has drawn up a special plan with the assistance of anti-terrorist units and the participation of more than 4,000 police officers, under the instructions of the Ministry of Civil Protection, for its storage.

Greece expects to receive 300,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine in the first stretch, meaning 150,000 people will be initially vaccinated (vaccines will require two doses per patient), government spokesman Stelios Petsas said on Wednesday.

The Minister of Health, Vasilis Kikilias, has described the vaccination campaign of the population as the most important of its kind since World War II, while the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called it “Operation Irini (Operation Freedom) ”.

Meanwhile, Greek health authorities on Friday announced 617 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 in the country, bringing the total number to 134,852.

The number of intubated patients stood at 470 currently intubated coronavirus patients (mean age is 67 years), while 851 have left the ICU.

The National Public Health Organization (EODY) said 50 people died due to Covid-19 in Greece, bringing the total death toll to 4,507.
