First call: Kevin Colbert may be exploring the QB client; the ex-Steeler signs with Bengals; Fita by Dan Marino

The Steelers may already be looking for a quarterback for next year’s draft. The Bengals have signed a former free agent for the Steelers. Raiders Maxx Crosby raised his eyebrows with his performance Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens.

And we celebrate the birthday of a Pitt football legend. All this in the first call today.

City of Tar Heel

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was at the North Carolina football practice Tuesday.

We know this because Tar Heels coach Mack Brown tweeted this photo with Colbert.

It’s not sure who was watching Colbert, but it’s safe to assume the Steelers were at least checking out Sam Howell.

Some see him as the best quarterback player in the NFL draft next spring. But Howell has struggled a bit this season. He has been sacked eight times and has thrown three interceptions during the first two games.

In just over two seasons at Chapel Hill, Howell has thrown 72 touchdowns and 17 selections while completing 64.3% of his passes.

With Ben Roethlisberger’s status in the air and without establishing any clear long-term starter after he leaves, many are wondering if the Steelers will make a shot in the draft or free agency this spring.

Do you want to return with Bengals?

The Cincinnati Bengals signed a former Steeler ahead of a Week 3 clash between rivals in the AFC North.

Sean Davis ’first safety stint with Pittsburgh lasted from 2016-19. He was picked up by Washington in March 2020, but was released in September. He then re-signed with the Steelers and played last year in Pittsburgh before signing with the Indianapolis Colts this spring.

He was released on August 31 and then joined the team’s training squad before returning as a free agent on September 14. That was when the Bengals decided to take him.

Davis, a sixth-year Maryland player, has played in 65 career games and has 244 offense, 2 half-game sacks, 21 defensive passes, five interceptions, a forced fall and a fall recovery.

Cincinnati switched Ricardo Allen’s safety to the injured reserve due to hand and hamstring injuries suffered during Week 1’s win over Minnesota.

Raider Rewards

AFC’s first defensive player of the week for 2021 was neither TJ Watt nor Cameron Heyward.

This despite the stellar performance of both Steelers in a win against the Buffalo Bills.

Instead, the honor went to Raider Maxx Crosby of Las Vegas. The defensive end featured six tackles and two sacks, along with numerous shots that sparked rushes and pressures from Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

He the ancient Steelers dusted Alexander off Weather in Villanueva on numerous occasions.

But the Raiders also received bad news. Defensive linebacker Gerald McCoy was placed in the wounded reserve with a knee injury. Damion Square replaces him on the list.

Great day b for Dan

Pitt’s legendary quarterback Dan Marino celebrated his birthday Wednesday – his 60th birthday.

Wait, this is impossible. If Marino is 60, that makes me … big enough to have remarkable moments like this when time evaporates before my eyes.

And that would do it this outstanding fact practically old.

But it still looks good, right?
