First ‘devastating’ for Hawaii, a pregnant woman hospitalized with COVID dies after giving birth

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Doctors have confirmed a pregnant woman on the islands who was seriously ill and hospitalized with COVID recently died after giving birth, in a tragic first in Hawaii.

After death, health officials urge pregnant women to get vaccinated.

“We have been notified of a maternal death, so a mother who died after giving birth after giving birth,” said Dr. Stacy Tsai, chair of the State of Hawaii’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee. “The baby gave birth and is doing well. The mother, unfortunately, had a very serious disease of COVID ”.

Due to medical privacy, Tsai says he cannot publicly share many details about the case or the mother’s vaccination status. But he said the loss affects everyone.

“It is very devastating. It’s about a baby or a newborn who will never really know their mother and who will never experience a mother’s love, ”said Tsai.

“My team and I get hurt every day when we have a bad result,” he added.

The CDC says pregnant women and recent pregnant women are more likely to suffer from severe COVID-19 disease.

“We are seeing women taking COVID during pregnancy and getting so sick that we need to give birth prematurely or prematurely to help them breathe better,” Tsai said.

Recently, on Papa Ola Lokahi’s Facebook page, Hawaiian native doctors held a webinar on wahine health, pregnancy and vaccine safety.

The recent death was part of the discussion.

“Not all women who have been hospitalized during pregnancy have been vaccinated,” said Dr. Reni Soon, OB / GYN of University Health Partners and Associate Professor of JABSOM.

“I have been OBGYN here in Hawaii for twenty years. I’ve seen more intubated and ventilated pregnant women in the last two months than the rest of my years. “

Major medical organizations agree that the vaccine is safe for pregnant women. “Get vaccinated if you’re pregnant,” Tsai said. Get vaccinated if you are close to pregnant people. “

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has questions and answers about the vaccine and pregnancy on its website. You can also find more information on the CDC website.
