The editorial board of the Florida-based newspaper, The Palm Beach Post, broke out on Friday with the governor. The editorial comes as several governors in recent weeks have taken steps to limit vaccine passports, documents that provide vaccination evidence to give people access to events with larger crowds, such as weddings and parties.
DeSantis issued a executive order in early April, it prevented government entities and private companies from requiring vaccination tests. He has argued that doing so violates individual freedom.
“The governor’s argument makes no sense. The issue at hand is public health. And there is no doubt that vaccines are the most effective weapon against COVID-19 that has ever been designed, “the board wrote.” By preventing Floridians from distinguishing who is vaccinated and who is not, DeSantis tells us that we are content to prolong the pandemic “.
The board noted that entities such as the cruise industry, sports leagues, theme parks and conventions could challenge order.
In addition, he stated that DeSantis’ argument was “baffling” and noted that it goes against the premise of his entire COVID-19 response so far.
“The whole governor’s response to COVID-19 has been based on the idea that it is better to trust people to do the right things without the government telling them what to do,” he wrote.
“Not here. Suddenly, DeSantis is not content to ban the government from requiring a ‘vaccine passport.’ Nor does it want companies to make that decision on their own,” he continued.
The newspaper said it would have understood to ban local and state governments from requiring vaccination tests but not private companies.
“If DeSantis had only banned Florida state and local governments from issuing vaccination passports, we would have understood, although we may not agree,” the board wrote. “But DeSantis’ decision to ban private entities that require inoculation tests is also strange and goes too far.”
The Hill has contacted DeSantis to comment.
Conservatives have argued that vaccine passports violate people’s right to privacy and the decision to get vaccinated.
