Florida reports 1,064 more deaths from COVID-19 and 46,105 new cases

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The death toll from COVID-19 in Florida has risen by 1,064 since Friday, according to the latest data released Monday by CDC.

These fatalities did not all occur over the weekend (many of the deaths are delayed and go back to weeks ago), but they reflect the toll this summer has had on the state.

More than 6,600 people died with COVID-19 in Florida in August, an average of more than 213 people a day, and even more fatalities can be added in August. It is already the deadliest month of the pandemic in the state.

Since the outbreak began, the state has confirmed 3,354,836 cases of COVID-19 and 46,973 virus-related deaths.

Florida reported 46,105 new cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, according to the latest CDC metric.

These figures reported by the CDC come from the Florida Department of Health, which only publishes a public report on Friday with its COVID-19 data.

Announcements

Last month, the state health department changed the death toll on the day it was verified and now tracked them down to the date a person died. Deaths usually take a few days to process, so single-date totals can slowly grow days later and day-to-day increases seem smaller at first.

Although numerous deaths have recently been reported in the state (including the 1,338 records added on Thursday), new cases and the state positivity rate have been on the decline.

After three consecutive weeks with more than 150,000 new cases, Florida added 129,240 from Aug. 27 to September. 2. This is the lowest number since the week that began on July 23rd.

As of Friday, the positivity rate of new state cases had dropped to 15.2%, the lowest since mid-July.

Announcements

Hospitalizations are also declining.

The Florida Hospital Association said there were 13,567 patients admitted with COVID-19 in the state on Sunday, a significant decrease from the recent peak driven by the delta variant.
