After collapsing during a game over the weekend, Florida men’s basketball player Gionde Johnson was in a medically induced coma, his grandfather told USA Today on Monday.
Johnson received his first aid in Tallahassee shortly after being taken from court on a stretcher in the first half of Saturday’s game between Gators and Florida. His grandfather Larry DeJournett told USA Today that his grandson was in Keynesville, Fla on Monday.
Doctors hoped Johnson would be brought out of a coma Monday afternoon, Djarnett said.
“They’re not sure,” Djarnett said. “He may have had brain activity, so they triggered a coma. They drugged him to seduce him. ”
Johnson, a former SEC player of the year, was initially described as in a critical but stable condition when he was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
It is not clear whether Johnson has previously tested positive for the corona virus or whether his condition is in any way linked to COVID-19. Florida had to suspend team operations last month following a positive corona virus test, with coach Mike White admitting the team had previous problems with COVID-19.
