Here is the Fortnite Echo Windwalker version! Wait, I’m sorry, Windwalker Echo. You know, the hero of last year’s Unreal Engine 5 demo? He one that ran on a PlayStation 5? Since last night, Fortnite is trying to convince me to add Windwalker Echo to my collection of slow-growing game skins, but I don’t know.
How Kotaku‘s last Fortnite convert, I quickly agreed with the weird ass skins that appear in the game store. I’m not talking about licensed fictional characters like Superman, Shang-Chi or Ariana Grande. I’m talking about Epic Games originals, like now the strange thing about the cat my former co-worker Riley MacLeod liked it. Or whatever a “Galaxy Grappler,” other than something I impulsively spent like $ 10 and still can’t understand why.
Epic is building this amazing stable of unique characters and selling them to players who desperately don’t want to look like everyone else playing the game. I understand. I understand. It makes some interesting models and even cooler toys. But if Epic thinks I will spend 800 V-Bucks on a character that appeared twice in what were basically ads for the game engine that the company already made millions, is probably very wrong.
G / O Media may receive a commission
For one thing, I only have 500 V-Bucks, having spent most of my monthly allowance on Galaxy Grappler. Although I appreciate the “Tattoos that light up when you open Chests!” Echo’s feature is not worth losing eight dollars for a virtual currency top-up. Also, his description says that Windwalker Echo is part of the “Wind Song” set and I can’t hear those two words together without getting a perfume ad from the seventies stuck in my head.
It seems that Epic is determined to turn this demo character into a real thing where people will spend fake money bought with real money. The company has even taken advantage of Mold3D Studio to produce a new animation demonstration with Windwalker Echo that matches the Fortnite skin release. If Nvidia had been so dedicated to its technology demonstrations, we would be up to our necks Nvidia fairies right now, and I would be looking forward to digging into my V-Bucks wallet to buy a Dawn skin.
But Windwalker Echo? I do not know. As the characters go by, it’s okay. She has brown hair. Her clothes are brown and blue. She does things. 800 V-Bucks are just not worth it. Not yet, at least.
