“Was it a great adventure to be able to create all this atmosphere so intimate, so familiar with the cast, and my main mission as an actress was to ask myself how my character feels and how she feels about others?
“I read the script in an hour, I thought the treatment was so precise and clear … I did a lot of research with midwives, with mothers who have lost children in situations, and I got an idea of something that I wanted to convey: compassion, ”he recounted Kirby in video conferencing.
Directed by the Hungarian Kornél Mundruczó, and written by his romantic partner, Kata Wéber, the film lands with very important recommendation credentials, as Kirby won the Fox Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival, And both she and Burstyn are noted as frank contenders for the Golden Globe and Oscar.
“Vanessa and I did great dumbbells, and I love that connection we were able to establish as a mother and daughter. Talking about a situation like the loss of a baby, putting it as the reason to understand all the pain of a family, was something that simply captivated me, ”Burstyn delineated.
Both Mundruczó and Wéber explained in the presentation of this film that the general idea was based on a personal experience of a miscarriage that she suffered years ago.
“He was the one who discovered some notes I made about this situation, and he pushed me to write something. We didn’t know at first what it would be, it wasn’t my intention to make a script or an argument for theater. First we did it for theater and then we adapted it for cinema, and we concretized it as it was, “said Wéber.
“I’m a little overwhelmed by the amount of expectations that are generated around the film, but I’m also excited because it’s in the interest of any filmmaker to see their work. I’m a storyteller, not all of them have an explanation, we just present them and here it is, ”Mundruczó added.
And if anything has highlighted international criticism of the film, it’s the nearly 25-minute sequence plan, which they achieved Vanessa, Shia and Molly, To recreate the failed arrival of the baby.
“It was a very well choreographed work, with a very close path to give it a touch of intimacy and solitude. I think the great success is of these fantastic actors we have in the film,” the director acknowledged.
Thus, with this introduction, those involved must question their future and present. Martha has to deal with the pain of her loss, The misunderstandings with her husband and the pressure exerted by her mother to take legal action against the midwife.
In addition, she feels confused by her ideals and does not know where to navigate, as she feels that everything she lives in at the moment is in vain.
“I think in these hard, complicated times we’re going through, pain and loss are two experiences that teach us, but they confuse us and we don’t know what they can give us in the long run. And maybe the film will lead you to understand a little about how we can open ourselves to pain and take on it so it doesn’t hurt so much, ”he explains Kirby.
